On this day exactly 28 years ago I graduated from High school at the ripe age of 17.  Less than 24 hours later I was surfing knee high waves off the west coast of Maui.  In a few short weeks I will reach my official half life.  28 years of hard work and travel and changed and molded me into the person I am to but those hard earned years were just my pre school.  Older and wiser I now believe I understand the answers to questions that bothered me so.

Bicycle touring with a dog

I jumped in headfirst and am knee deep into the planning stages of bicycle touring with Chloe.  I won’t know if it will work till I try but I’m all in.  A tiny home base will be my jumping point, the goal is 6 months in the saddle and six months exploring locally.  Where to begin…flat bars, drop bars, risers, carbon, steel, aluminum, titanium fat tire, skinny tires its all quite overwhelming but ill have plenty of time to figure it all out on the road, for now I have my blown steel steed Schwinnie and she is rocking it.

Nostalgic music has been stuck in my head all day since receiving that email reminding me how old I am.  lyrics from The Animals House of the rising sun are rolling through my mind.

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Any form of freedom in this world is hard earned, life as I know it is teetering in the balance.  I already live a life as an extreme minimalist but another culling will soon begin.  If it can’t fit on the bike it goes, everything is on the chopping block, piece by peice only the lightest most functional items will remain.  I’m reopening my ebay store and selling everything.  For a person with so little this is a really big deal but I have till the boat sells to acomplish this so I should have some time on my hands.  For now my food hoarding days are over and I am slowly depleting my stores with hopes that everything will be gone by fall.

This is really scary and I have  a bit of an empty feeling inside at the thought of selling my home and the safety and security she offers but risk is the key ingredient in sucess.  My sailing days aren’t ending, in fact they have yet to begin.  I have sailed half of the world, my next sailing journey will complete the loop and finish a circumnavigation I started in 1987.  For now Im peddling back to the future.

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama any way you feel
Hey mama rock me

Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a southbound train
